Screen share is using software decoding (VP8) regardless of codec settings

Observed behaviour

I'm encountering a strange issue where it does not matter what encoding settings I select, Fluxer is always picking VP8 for its encoding process which my processor doesn't support. I've selected every different option, restarted the client each time, and yet this never stops being an issue. It will also always say VP8 regardless of the encoding setting picked. I should mention, I am on the latest Canary. Windows 10 64x 1909. Sadly am locked on this version of windows, though it shouldn't matter given that programs like Discord do not have this issue. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6820HK CPU @ 2.70GHz NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080

Reproduction steps

Join a VC Start watching a stream Notice will pop up shortly regardless of encoding settings.

Just an update, the message no longer appears, but according to Task Manager and GPU usage monitoring, it still is using software encoding despite no longer showing the message, indicating the setting is still being ignored currently.

I believe your graphics card supports VP9. However, are you using HDR? If so, try disabling it in your display device settings (desktop). Yesterday, my friend had exactly the same problem...

Nah, I don't have an HDR display or monitor, so that definitely isn't part of the issue.

You should check it anyway... AFAIK it's possible to enable HDR without a proper display monitor. image

It could be helpful to (after ensuring you are indeed running on the very latest version, since some updates have been made since the creation of the issue) capture a voice diagnostic. You can do so by going to User Settings > Advanced > scroll to the bottom to "Developer" > enable developer mode. image Then, whilst in a call reproducing the problem, you could capture a voice diagnostic: image The only "sensitive" information it should contain would be the names of your input and output audio devices. You can check it and redact anything you find doesn't need to be there, however. If those of you who are able to reproduce this issue sent this in here, that would be helpful for debugging. Thanks!

I have similar problem. On first try app crashed on wayland window select, but now it works. Also I cannot select most codecs and those I can will be software encode mode. Running newest AUR package on CachyOS and AMD RX 9070 XT. image debug.log

I have the same in Firefox and Brave on Fedora 44 with a 4070 ti I assumed it had something to do with Linux, but I'm not sure so I'll paste it here, too. If hardware encoding on Linux in browser is just not supported yet, ignore this I can only select H.264 and VP8, even after ticking "Allow AV1" and "Allow H.265": image Nerd stuff from back in the #3122 fixes one part of this: Firefox on Linux was being offered H.264, but the voice server doesn't accept H.264 from Firefox on Linux, so it silently sent VP8 while the UI said H.264. The codec picker and diagnostics now match what's sent there. It doesn't make Firefox encode in hardware, and it doesn't cover the Windows report. @re11ding, the last screenshot is about software decoding of a stream you're watching. If you can capture a voice diagnostic while that warning is showing, that would help narrow it down. @MathiasLui, if you retest, the outbound codec shown in the diagnostic would be useful to see.

Retested with self-hosted Stable Web 2026.1002.172440, Linux (x64), Firefox 156.0. I'm half unsure if it now acts as expected "Automatic" now selects VP8, with only VP8 and VP9 being selectable. Selecting either and restarting the call correctly displays the selected codec in about:webrtc (voice diagnostic with VP8 selected is at the end, if you meant that). I think my main issue was actually about software encoding, not decoding, though I no longer get the yellow warning about "yo, software encoding being used". Is that correct? Because it looks like so far I can only use software-encoding Though, now the stream suddenly manages to stream 1440p60 for both (as selected by me) instead of using 720p30 If I enable experimental support for encodings that my GPU directly supports (AV1 and H.265) and restart the call, then:
  • AV1 is also using software encoding
  • H.265 is still not selectable (bug?):
image However, in Brave Browser I can still select H.264 (also automatic) and it only streams 720p30, but selecting VP8 or VP9 here does stream 1440p60, just like in Firefox It looks like it doesn't Thanks for retesting, @MathiasLui! What you're seeing in Firefox is now the expected behaviour.
  • The LiveKit server refuses H.264 publishing from Firefox on Linux and Android [1]. Until now we still offered H.264 there, so the client asked for it and the SDK silently fell back to VP8 while the UI and diagnostics kept saying H.264. #3122 stops offering H.264 in that case, so the codec picker now shows what is actually sent.
  • We clamp screen shares to 720p30 when H.264 runs as a software encoder [2], because Chromium's software H.264 encoder (OpenH264) can't keep up at higher settings. Before that fix the app believed it was sending H.264, so it applied the clamp to what was really a VP8 stream. Now that it knows it's VP8, the clamp no longer applies.
  • Firefox doesn't implement hardware encoding for WebRTC on Linux. Its VA-API support only covers decoding [3], so AV1 is software as well. The yellow warning is gone because Firefox doesn't report which encoder it uses, so we can't tell either way. It doesn't mean it switched to hardware.
  • Firefox doesn't support H.265 for WebRTC at all, only Chrome 136+ does [4].
  • Chromium on Linux ships with hardware video encoding off unless it's enabled with AcceleratedVideoEncoder on a working VA-API driver [5]. So H.264 there was software and got the 720p30 clamp, while VP8 and VP9 didn't. #3139 makes Automatic skip H.264 whenever it would be software encoded and clamped, and pick VP9 or VP8 instead. A manual H.264 pick is still honoured. (The diagnostic labelled H.264 in your comment is actually from a VP8 share, for what it's worth.)

Thanks for the fast feedback and fixes, I have tested the new version and it now automatically selects VP8 on Firefox, and VP9 on Brave I feel like hardware encoding/decoding seems to be a general problem on Linux, because not even Discord seems to do that out of the box according to nvidia-smi dmon (despite me finding a video by them claiming they should)
