Current problem
people usually choose a username that they like and remember and sharing the tags in real life is difficult if i have to pull out my phone, enter my unlock credentials, open the app/browser/whatever available and check what my code is
i don't know a whole lot of people who know their ssn or credit card number off the top of their head
Proposed change
actual usernames, because even if a certain one is taken, you can alter them in a way that the owner of the account can remember them
Additional information
please!!

#0000discriminators will need to change to a more normal one just to avoid being easily spotted. For the central instance, I think it is probably important to keep discriminators. Self-hosted instances can give everyone visionary so they can set their usernames to#0000if they want, and while there's no way to enforce that I feel when federation comes most accounts on self-hosted instances will already be using#0000so the issue of potentially having double discriminators is easily sidestepped.Comment by Echoki

jan_Sanku; if underscore is unavailable, replace it with a dash. if capitals are unavailable, replace it with a lowercase. by following simple intuition, you can guess my username on nearly all platforms; except for fluxer and stoat. the fact that the discriminator is not fully static is extremely inconvenient. i'm strongly considering gettingnitroplutonium, and of course i would make use of the customization. but if i decide to cancel it in the future, i assume the discriminator gets re-randomized. that means i can't reliably link my username on websites or in code without being sure it'll be valid in the future, unless i decide to fully forego customizing it with Pu. unique usernames are used literally everywhere else, and we have proper display names on top of our usernames already! the ONLY reason to use #xxxx is discord nostalgia, which, in my opinion, is not a good reason.Comment by sanku
