Some other platforms have used a valid credit card on file/credit card transaction as age verification, so could be a good viable alternative in those specific areas? Preferably this won't impact self-hosted instances as mentioned above

Fair, I think credit cards are usually 18 minimum in quite a few places (UK/US etc. and Debit Cards aren't a good factor in this since most places allow kids to have bank accounts + debit cards.) I think Steam is using credit cards as a part of age verification but might be a case by case basis depending on the country, whether it is even feasible to look at or add is another question, and again hopefully doesn't apply to self-hosting, or at least in a very limited way.
