Some other platforms have used a valid credit card on file/credit card transaction as age verification, so could be a good viable alternative in those specific areas? Preferably this won't impact self-hosted instances as mentioned above

this doesn't quite work, or like it depends on country, you can have credit cards as a minor at least in some countries. I think I am only aware of US where you need to be 18 to have credit card.
