Advanced profile customization with custom code or a profile editor

(#912) Feature Under consideration profiles theming

This should be a very long-term thing.

I’ll get straight to the point, and I’m sorry if I don’t express myself well.

Main Idea

Why not allow users to create profiles almost from scratch? There could be two options:
  • Simple option – Like the one Discord and 90% of websites offer when creating a profile.
  • Advanced option – A fully customizable profile where users can personalize it deeply, even by adding their own code.

Where This Idea Comes From

On MyAnimeList, users can add their own CSS. I’ve noticed that many people end up using external websites to link more customizable pages in their profiles.

Native Implementation Proposal

Could this be implemented natively, allowing users to:
  • Create highly customizable profiles
  • Display them directly within the app
  • Configure them either:
    • From within the application itself, or
    • By inserting custom files

Current Workaround Examples

Here are examples of external sites that users commonly link in their profiles:

Clarification

I’m not asking for tracking or analytics features. The main goal is to allow profiles to be extremely customizable, either directly within the app or through file-based configuration. My proposal is simple: allow users to upload configuration files and even provide a profile editor to create more visually appealing and advanced designs.

What This Would Include

  • The ability to import or insert configuration files
  • A built-in profile editor for deeper customization
  • More creative freedom to design unique and attractive profiles
The goal is to make profile creation more flexible and good looking.
  • ☐ I searched for existing issues and didn't find a duplicate.

Status changed from Shipped to Under consideration
Reopened because it was marked shipped but staff said profiles would not get more customisable.

If this is added, I would like some option to disable this, as some people on discord have flashing effects which makes their profile difficult to read, and with the amount of customisation this would allow potentially dangerous things like strobing images (putting epileptic users at risk), or could just be very difficult to read certian colour combinations causing accessibility/reading strain

I agree we need safeguards. If a user disables advanced profiles, it could simply show the basic version instead. I'd prefer splitting the controls into two levels: settings for friends vs. settings for non-friends. Discord already does something similar with its sensitive content filter, you can make it global or disable it for friends only. On top of that, it would be great to have per-user overrides, so you can individually disable the custom profile for specific people if needed.
