SMIL-animated SVGs are not considered animated images

Summary

Fluxer has special considerations for animated images. They cannot be uploaded as profile pictures by non-Plutonium accounts, and are considered a separate category of emoji when used as such. Fluxer does not consider SVG images animated with SMIL attributes to be animated images, and they are treated as static, despite animating in all cases where they appear.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Upload a profile picture in SVG format which contains SMIL animation attributes.
  2. Send a message in any channel.
  3. Observe that the profile picture animates, even while the mouse cursor is not hovering over a message by your user account.
I tested this by running my current profile picture through VTracer, to produce an SVG variant of it without using embedded data: URIs (since those are disabled on Fluxer, intentionally or not, I can't tell), then by adding an SMIL animation attribute to it. The SVG in question. Note that, due to the complexity of the images produced by VTracer, the animation causes a noticable performance hit on my hardware, which is concerning, given that these images also animate 100% of the time. trenchfoot#0069 tried the same with an animated SVG of extreme complexity, and in attempting to render it, my client slowed down to the point of taking multiple seconds to render a frame, so this may be a vector for DoSing users of the Fluxer web client as well.

Environment

stable build 508 (3250c73), 2026-06-06 21:26:08 UTC, Electron 40.0.0, Linux 7.0.12-201.fc44.x86_64 (x64), desktop stable 0.0.0 Flatpak version of the Fluxer stable client on Fedora Silverblue 44. Note that SVGs do not animate on the Fluxer mobile client beta.

Now, if anyone is reading this and plans to do something with SVG, stop, reconsider your actions, and use TinyVG instead
