Archiving specific channels within a guild

(#4647) Feature Open: Under consideration channels

Current problem

note: i'm using the world 'archive' here because it's what exists in my mental model, but i know that the word 'archive' is already in use for a specific and different purpose within the admin API. the request is not precious about specific nomenclature. Currently, if an admin of a guild wanted to de-clutter the channel list by hiding old or inactive channels from all users in a guild, they have to do any number of several manual steps:
  1. Set a per-channel visibility role permission to remove visibility. This also means that users cannot search any of the content in these channels.
  2. Lock a channel, or set it to read-only. This prevents people from adding new content to an old channel.
  3. Migrate old channels to a specific category, and then advise all users to mute that category and hide muted channels in order to de-clutter their individual channel list.
In this scenario, the content of those channels might still be historical knowledge that the guild wants to keep available for reference, or available in search indexes, and therefore does not want to delete from the guild or hide from all guild members. however, use of those channels is either discouraged or prevented entirely, and browsing via the channel list could result in user confusion.

Proposed change

Give guild admins the ability to set a new channel status with a single click (or toggle etc) that would give the channel the following properties:
  1. Closed, in the manner of threads - indicate that the channel is old/outdated/inactive, and that sending a message will change the active status of this channel
OR, optionally:
  1. Locked / read-only - indicate that the channel is not able to accept new messages
  2. Maintain search indexing, and allow users to find content of that channel through search results (which also necessarily means that if a user "jumped to message", they would be able to browse the message history of the channel with a transient channel listing in the sidebar, in the manner of a closed or locked thread)
  3. Hide the channel from the sidebar channel list of all users in the guild.
and, optionally, per admin or owner user:
  1. Allow admins or owners to Show Archived Channels, which would leave all channels regardless of status visible in the channel list permanently, for moderation or guild management etc

Additional information

benefits gained from this feature, vs existing options and workarounds:
  1. channels with the archived status maintain location-relative context in the category or sort order of the guild, rather than being moved to a separate arbitrary category
  2. admins can encourage existing and new users to migrate to new channels (or potentially, from a channel to a forum etc) by easily removing outdated or inactive channels from the channel list (and thus mental model) of the users
  3. channel historical data is not lost permanently, like deletion, nor locked away from reference by all users like private channels. searching for historical data that might exist in the old channel will still yield results for anyone who needs it.
