Reevaluate Operator Pass Price

(#4541) Feature Open: Under consideration

Current problem

The current pricing is expensive given the perks that come with it. As mentioned on the table in the Operator Pass webpage, we are given the following bonuses:
  • Recognition through the following modalities:
  • Operators' Wall
  • Yearly Operators' List
  • Operators' badge
  • Operator mark on instance listing.
  • @operator with access to #operators
  • Invitations to try new features before they're released.
It seems that much of the value proposition for the operator pass revolves around official recognition. While this is appreciated, it may be worth examining how much additional, tangible value these benefits provide to operators when alternative platforms such as fluxerlist.com and fluxer.directory have provided benefits like instance listing free of charge for the past several months. Additionally, I think that paying for invitations to try new features before release can be a fun opportunity. But, I question how much value this provides, especially when it could be perceived as paying to participate in beta-testing rather than to receive a distinct benefit or service. As mentioned in the operator pass terms:
We can change, pause, or end any part of the bonus for everyone at any time, and you get no refund or other compensation when we do...The [#operators] channel is a place to talk, and the pass is not a support contract. There is no guaranteed response time or service level, and we do not promise that any question gets an answer, [or] that Hampus takes part in any given conversation.
If the operator pass has been evaluated to be priced at ~$200 whilst at the same time is not a guarantee for support, it does not appear to serve any other purpose outside of digital aesthetics and instance listing. Support is already a teamwork based effort amongst Hampus and the rest of the community in the #self-hosting Fluxer Developers channel. So if the pass is in fact "not a support contract" and there are no promises "that Hampus takes part in any given conversation," I would recommend bringing the price lower to temper people's expectations of what value they would be getting from the operator pass because a payment of such monetary value suggests a $200 service which this arguably isn't, respectfully.

Proposed change

As mentioned earlier, the recommended proposed change is to bring the price down. The value proposition at ~$200 does not match what the pass appears to provide operators that they wouldn't already be able to get from the community within the Fluxer Developers #self-hosting channel. If the price cannot be lowered, then I'd instead ask that a financial analysis be provided as to why the price should be at $200, why the price will go up in 2027, and what the projected amount of purchases was going to be. It is a good thing that Fluxer has no intentions of taking venture capital and wants to be community funded by the people, but it's hard for operators to justify paying $200 for something that appears to not provide a $200 value.

Additional information

I apologize for the untimeliness of this post. I personally have had a very busy past 3 weeks. At least one other individual who voiced their concerns to Hampus directly via DM spoke to me and felt like it would be more appropriate and effective to have their concerns posted in Feedback Fluxer by someone who does host a Fluxer instance, such as myself. I've made this post in support of Fluxer with no malicious intent and wish for its continued success as someone who has been following it since February, made an account in April, and self-hosted a Fluxer instance the moment the original v2 update dropped in mid June, but I think shepherding that success forward requires explanations for things like what operator pass is providing at its price point. I intend on purchasing the operator pass at some point to support the platform since I'm not paying for premium features that I can already get from my self-hosted instance, but before I purchase the pass, I would like to see this feedback addressed with grace and intelligence that I know the Fluxer team is capable of.
