Feedback on new in-app sound proposals (read the note)

(#4275) Discussion Open: Under consideration
Note
I'm aware manually importing these sounds isn't all that convenient! I'll add this soon: https://feedback.fluxer.com/p/937/import-export-sound-packs. Note that I'm still going to let you switch between the legacy and the new sounds if this were to be implemented, nothing's being forced on anyone, and the sound pack feature would allow people to make their own sounds that people could easily install too.
Hey all! A community member has been working on some new in-app sounds for Fluxer and we'd love your feedback so that they can improve for the better. You can download and set these sounds in the web & desktop app in User Settings > Notifications > Sounds. Here is what each file is for:

for me personally, I can't help but feel like these sound too generic? it's hard to really design a sound with the intention of it being iconic to the platform its on, but none of these, to me, strike "fluxer" in my heart

The message-notification.wav sound to me feels not smooth enough, the notes are too disjointed or something. It bothers my mind in some way and I just don't like it. I'm also not really a fan of the echo on many of the voice-channel-related sounds.

I love incoming-call.wav !! However I don't love the echo-y falloff that many of the notifications have. I prefer a sharper attack and release (though not to the point of harshness) for notifications.

I thought the user joins voice was a bit too... I know it's supposed to be audible over what ever is going on but, maybe the decay could be quicker? Iow. make it stop sooner.

As a hobby musician and music producer, I like where this is going. This is what I'm thinking:
  1. I think the delay is nice to have, but there's too much of it. I'd recommend maintaining the delay BPM, but reducing how many times it tails off. Additionally, seeing that a lot of people are mentioning the delay, you may also want to pull back the wet signal on the delay. If you want to automate the wet signal, use a compressor and side chain it to the delay so that the delay is compressed appropriately.
  1. I really like the melody for incoming-call.wav with how it's harmonically structured. The chord changes are simple and it doesn't resolve to home until the very end, which feels intentional considering that receiving a notification from a user standpoint is an unresolved notification until the user acknowledges it. I'd recommend keeping the melody and most of the changes; maybe consider not doing vi-I towards the end, and keep the vibe in a major key.
  1. The mute sounds don't feel intentional in that given the note register, it makes the sound feel too bright, which is the opposite of feeling muted. By contrast, the deafen sounds feel intentional. I'd recommend changing the approach for the mute sounds.
In summary, I think the sounds are going in a good direction. Please also consider the rest of the community's comments!

Not sure how to feel about the new sounds, they sure have a strong identity but also sound like a retro-nostalgic video game, especially the ringtone What I mean by the video game part is it doesn't sound like a neutral soundscape for a communication app, but it's not bad either

I added the new message-notification.wav, and I right away feel like this new sound is bit too quiet compared to the old one, the volume is quite low esp if you're playing some game or listening to music in the background.

These sounds are a lot nicer than the originals, however I still feel that they suffer from the issue where on smaller speakers with bad low-frequency response (eg; Phones, Computer Monitor Speakers) they can become basically inaudible. Awhile back I ended up creating my own custom sounds for Fluxer and gave them out to close friends of mine. I think if you could use some of the sounds that I've designed as a reference with the above note in mind, something even better could be created in contest:

All these sounds are excellent, especially the ringtone! Love the theme of them as well.

I like all off them (impressive work) except the incoming call one. It sounds a little too much by the end. I'd expect it to be the music to play in the main menu of a legend off zelda type off game. the first ~3 seconds off it would be enough.

They did do objectively great work with this, and it's an improvement over lots of the current sounds for sure, although I agree with what Spax says, it's hard to make the sound ""iconic"". Maybe these could be experimented with some more

I like incoming call! Idk if the lower quality retro audio is very fitting with the modernity of Fluxer though. It also doesn't really feel fitting for an app centered around communication. I don't want to be too harsh, but to me it honestly feels like the sounds belong in a $.99 GameMaker Studio game. I also agree with some of the other comments about reverb being too much.

Sorry for the unrelated comment, but just FYI I have no option to download those on Firefox. I see the three dot menu for each one in Vivaldi, but not Firefox.

These sounds are good for something else... I feel they might be a a little too dynamic, they also feel generic in the way of they seem like they are kinda replicating whats been done before, I'm getting heavy skype vibes from these and while it can be nostalgic I do not think they fit fluxer as a modern platfrom, I'm all for changing the current sounds (not that they are bad, they are just basic) I think that it would seem odd to have these with the ui fluxer has and they might feel a bit disconnected from the ui. I can imagine these in 2009-2011 ish still on Windows 7, and I understand people love that style and design and I like it as well but it has a place and I don't think fluxer is that place. If you wanted to make an easter egg in advanced settings at some point that kinda gives fluxer a more "retro" feel these would be great for that, however I'm not too sure about the main style of fluxer that everyone signing up for the first time sees having these as sounds. A suggestion would be to take the current sounds pacing and overall vibe and find a way to make that more unique and distinct for fluxer, one issue with these new ones and the current ones is that they arent intuitive they just feel kinda like sounds that very vaugely represent what is happening, and I feel that sounds should be intuitive and help you understand without looking what is happened or has happend. (eg. you got a message, or are getting a call) I don't know thoes are just my thoughts and I hope they are useful to you.
