Current problem
Spinning up a self-hosted community is very easy for anyone who's good at following instructions and has a device to spare. You can probably achieve about 90% of what a small Discord community would desire with just a gaming PC and Cloudflare. Where it gets tricky is voice and video implementation, as it can feel like you're fighting to achieve what will probably end up being a sub-par experience to the official Fluxer instance.
Proposed change
I imagine this would probably only become feasible once federation is implemented, but my idea is that you would have several users connected to a private instance with their official Fluxer accounts. Within the private community, an "official" voice channel that can be nestled within the other channels, but effectively functions as a redirect to a glorified group call on the official instance. It would look and function as though it were a normal voice channel, but would leverage Fluxer's infrastructure for better connectivity. Plutonium benefits would work as normal, of course.
I think a pain point for a lot of small communities is they have the desire to self-host for privacy, but can't compete with the infrastructure and stability they've come to expect from Discord. I think a hybrid implementation would significantly lower barrier for entry for a lot of people while avoiding the feeling of futility for those less tech-savvy.
I'm not sure how easy or hard this would be to implement but it seems plausible in my mind with some client trickery. The workaround at the moment is for everyone to just use a different client for voice calls; whereas this would make it look and feel more integrated within the community.
