[Desktop App] "Update Available" won't go away

(#3748) Bug Needs triage

Observed behaviour

Whenever I click on the "update available" button, it closes out, and says "checking for updates" before rebooting. And then the prompt still remains there. I've closed the app, I've restarted the app, I've done everything, and it is still there.

Reproduction steps

  1. Attempt to update with "update available"
  2. Get the "checking for updates" text.
  3. Repeat.

Build information

Canary Desktop 2026.1008.190209, Web 2026.1009.45608, Windows 11 10.0.26300 (x64), Electron 44.4.1, Chrome 152.0.7977.78, Node 24.21.0, Locale en-US

Platform

Windows

Evidence

Screenshot 080022 is me seeing the update. 080113 is me attempting to update, and there being no updates installed whatsoever. 080201 just has me right back to the same exact page, after updating nothing. I'm not sure what's going on.

this is a bug in the 2026.1008.190209 shell: the app files updated to 45608 but the shell itself never does, so the prompt keeps coming back. for now, installing the latest canary over your current install fixes it and keeps your data: https://pkgs.fluxer.com/desktop/canary/win32/x64/2026.1009.45608/setup (on a windows arm device, swap x64 for arm64 in the link). a fix so stuck installs update on their own is coming

Weirdly, I kept hitting the "check for updates" button on the taskbar icon, and I managed to update. I am now on Canary Desktop 2026.1009.45608, so it looks like I managed to resolve the issue... somehow. I guess it all works out? I'll still keep an eye in case this happens again. Thanks for being so quick about this!
