Linux AppImage Fails with Sandbox Error

(#360) Bug Won't fix desktop packaging

Summary

If i run the appimage for Linux on Ubuntu, it fails to load. I expect the AppImage to work out of the box. If I run the appimage with --no-sandbox command line argument, then it works fine.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Download the latest AppImage
  2. Try to run it
  3. See sandbox error

Rather than run without sandboxing I'm aborting now. You need to make sure that /tmp/.mount_fluxera6NOrk/chrome-sandbox is owned by root and has mode 4755.

I get this a lot with other AppImages, it's less an issue with the Fluxer AppImage and more to do with the configuration of the sandbox on Ubuntu. Other Linux distros don't seem to have this issue.

Is there a general "recommended" way of fixing this or getting around it? I was thinking if there was a way to fix it for the appimage itself, or maybe provide some notes for ubuntu users to know how to get around the problem. I've messed with chromium alot so I had an idea on how to fix it, but others may have alot more difficulty with this sort of problem.

I've always just used the --no-sandbox flag as a workaround. There's probably some configuration that can be done on Ubuntu's sandbox but i haven't had luck actually fixing that.
