Update (and sometimes installer) downloads fail on slower internet connections

Observed behaviour

downloads a few minutes and then fails with an incorrect error message note: sometimes this also happens when downloading the installer with a browser. the browser however saves the download progress which is the only reason i was even able to install fluxer

Reproduction steps

have a slow internet, in my case less than 1 Mbps (yes that is my actual internet right now on good days i get 10 Mbps). this means most people will need to limit their internet artificially to test this
try to download a canary update
