Bot Intents

(#1416) Feature Under consideration api privacy

Current problem

Current problem:
  1. Bots currently have to opt out of receiving certain gateway events, which introduces network strain.
  2. Consequently, a bot can track, process, and store all gateway events received.
  3. Consequently, a bot can spy on or stalk users.

Proposed change

Intents (from Discord, but better)
  • A bot application can only receive events associated with intents that are configured to true.
  • All disabled intents do not send the gateway events associated with them.
  • Enabled intents are visible at all times when clicking on a bot's profile from anywhere.
  • The intents of a bot application may be changed with a heavy cooldown.
    • Intent changes are versioned and tracked.
    • Intent updates are not automatically reflected across all communities that the bot is in.
    • Communities must opt in to automatic intent updates per bot, or else manual updates from Community administrators (those who can invite bots) are required.
    • When the intents update, a system message will be sent in the Community to notify the Community administrators. (This requires a feature similar to #moderators-only).
