Invite links that give a role on join

(#1225) Feature Under consideration community

Problem

I want to be able to open the server to the public but keep my community safe. The idea is that registration still works, and the community has no/low permission rooms/voice for public members. I can manually add the role for a member to users which are known/trusted so they can access more channels and/or can actually chat. Doing this by hand is a lot of work, ideally this should be somewhat automated.

Proposal

If I can attach a role to an invitation link, this issue could be resolved. Ideally, for single community servers, a server invitation would allow for registration (already possible) with a role attached would be really really handy. With this, I can give friends the special invite so they can directly become members without my intervention. They can also pass it to trusted people without me needing to verify all the new users - all the while not having a wild run on registration.

Status changed from Shipped to Under consideration
Reopened because role-attached invites were never built and only a bot workaround was offered.

I don't think I'm able to infer from a user if a certain admin registration url was used. At least a quick glance at the API/Admin UI doesn't show the relation.

I could open up to public registration & use the bot with guild invites I guess?

Small update with bot experimentation: That is certainly possible with a caveat that it's unable to gate unverified users. Adding a role to a user from an invite will allow a user to use all the permissions of the role, whether the community is gated or not and whether the user is verified or not. From a safety standpoint, this is not much an option right now :D
