Advertising & Username Prefix Changes

(#1172) Feature Declined community moderation

Problem

People keep making special usernames to appear on top and advertise stuff, not that I am against it, but it feels like exploiting the mechanism of sorting members. I don't wanna see the first 15 members with prefixes in their name for this purpose.

Proposed solution

Give an option of listing members randomly or by their id adress on members-sidebar to prevent people from using certain notations on their username to appear on top for advertising, not that I am against advertising, but the action to advertise more effectively sounds not right to me, I don't want to see the first 15 people doing the same thing and appear on the members section with repeating notation at the beginning of their username

Status changed from Shipped to Declined
Marked declined because staff said they will likely not add other member sorting options, so shipped was wrong.

BTW, it's usually referred to as "hoisting" when users add special characters to put themselves at the top of the member list.

Would be cool if we can choose between different options (oldest to newest or newest to oldest Fluxer/server join date...)

Some alternatives:
  • allowing "starts with" filtering so usernames that start with certain patterns are just filtered out
  • allowing sort-by (username/displayname/id/newest-join/oldest-join/etc)
  • having a list of disabled character patterns from community nicknames
