DM Folders with Smart Filters & Default Routing

Problem

Right now, users can’t organize their direct messages in any meaningful way, which causes clutter and makes it difficult to manage conversations, especially for users with many DMs (friends, communities, moderation, etc.) All conversations appear in a single list, forcing users to manually search or scroll. There’s no way to group people (e.g., “Friends”, “Moderation”) or automatically sort incoming messages based on content or behavior This leads to Important conversations getting buried and no separation between personal and functional DMs

Proposed solution

Add a DM Folder system that allows users to organize conversations into folders, with optional smart filtering rules and a default routing folder. Core features:
  1. Manual folders
• Users can create folders (e.g., “Friends”, “Moderation”, “Projects”) • Conversations can be dragged into folders or assigned manually
  1. Smart folders (filters)
• Folders can optionally act as “smart folders” using rules such as: • Message contains / does not contain specific keywords (e.g., “hello”) • Sender matches conditions (user, role, etc.) • Combination of multiple “if” conditions Example: • If message contains “hello” > move to “Greetings” folder • If sender is in moderator list > move to “Moderation” folder
  1. Default folder
• Users can set a folder as the default destination • New DMs automatically go into this folder unless matched by a smart rule
  1. Visual customization
• Folders can be customized with colors (text or accent) • Improves quick recognition and visual grouping
  1. Fallback behavior
• If no rules match and no default is set, messages go to the main DM list

Notes (optional)

• UI inspiration: similar to email inbox folders or Discord server categories • Should support drag-and-drop organization • Smart filters could use a simple rule builder (no coding required) • Future expansion: tagging system or priority folders My fluxer is nebf#0008
