Age Verification via KWS (Kids Web Services)

(#1063) Feature Shipped moderation privacy

Problem

In the UK, we are being force to verify our ages to view certain content. Bluesky is using KWS (Kids Web Services) to verify users ages. KWS is owned by Epic Games https://www.kidswebservices.com/ Once a user has verified their age on with KWS, any other site/service that uses KWS will automatically be verified without having to submit card details or facescan or ID again. Just the one time. Currently Fluxer only accepts credit card as a form of verification, but not everyone has or wants a credit card.

Proposed solution

Could KWS be added as an option to verify age? Those of us who have already verified for bluesky won't need to submit sensitive data to yet another third party.

Isn't this the exact thing discord just did, which is the main reason people are seeking out alternative applications like this in the first place?

Fluxer has already implemented age verification for UK users, but it requires Credit Card. They have to do it because of UK laws. (self hosted servers will be a different thing and up to the server hosters) But for the Fluxer hosted servers, the option to verify with other means would be nice. And I'd personally don't want to be sending my personal ID to several different "Age Verification" services, but KWS seems like a one and done service, as I'm already age verified on Bluesky.

Why are you against this? Do you have any suggestions how to resolve this issue?

This seems reasonable. It is just an option someone could use. It wouldn't be forced on everyone.

Go host your own instance with age verification. We came here because we DO NOT want age verification. If you want to NOT have age verification you NEED to contact your MEP just like how I contact my congressmen.

Putting an option in it requires infrastructure and a comitment between both parties. This has to be staged.

Fluxer has already added age verification... It seems you did not read the post.

Using a credit card is NOT the same as using a ID

It is because you can only get a credit card if you're 18, debit cards on the other hand are 13+ and are not accepted by Fluxer and can't be used for age verification.

Anyone can use moms credit card if they see it wether its moral or not. There will always be a way around this. This isnt about minors, this is about slowly enforcing control. I could even argue that complying with the UK instead of just blacklisting it and baking support for spyware into a platform is also very debatable. I know forks can exist and its customizable but yea.

I'm not asking to use ID. Fluxer is making us age verify via Credit Card, which not everyone wants or has. I've already verified once on other platforms via KWS. I don't want to give credit card details to Stripe.... image I'm simply asking for alternative options to age verify. Your solution is to blacklist the UK? And every country that is eventually going to implement these restrictions?

We have to assess where it is going, and you can use a VPN in the meantime to circumvent a restricive government. We are facing this with LInux as well in the state of cali and colorado. People in china and russia use a VPN or TOR in some situations all the time to get online, and while this is a bit excessive this is now a requirement as well as potentially blacklisting countries that do NOT want to give access to a free and open internet to its people's. You need to make infrasturcture to implement age verfication which will just end in millions of user's getting pwned and universal government overeach. You have to attack the laws put in place and not give into it or you ultimentely have no free will. You are the problem if you are suggesting alternives ways to verify your age when you know for a fact dead on you want a ID or facial option which is unacceptable as we do not want it, we do not have infra for that, it is not okay or normal. Go make your own fork and partner with K-ID and persona if you want that but get out of here if you want to make it more convient to lobby for the government just to have it your way over the people's just because its more convient for you.
