Allow mobile notification grouping for notification spam

(#3593) Feature Open: In progress mobile notifications

Current problem

When someone is talking in a channel with someone else, you receive a push notification for every single message. This can be annoying when you're currently busy and your phone is constantly going off. I do want to see a notification that something is sent in the channel, but not for every message.

Proposed change

Maybe add a setting that allows you to disable/enable (maybe on a per-channel basis) the ability to group these notifications together so that you don't receive a notification for every single message.

Platform

Android, iOS

Additional information

Discord does this by default but doesn't have the ability to change this, I do like that I receive a notification per DM for example, but I would like to disable this for channels in a guild.

Current problem

At the moment you get the notification sound played each time a user or friend sends you a DM, same as in group. Which can be quite annoying if the person is someone that sends a message per sentence, Mute exists but then you miss them writing to you in general.

Proposed change

Vencord/Vesktop has this plugin called OnePingPerDM and the description fits what I'd want as a feature here as well. "If unread messages are sent by a user in DMs multiple times, you'll only receive one audio ping. Read the messages to reset the limit" They also have the option for it to be either DMs, groups or both. It would be nice to have a toggle that enables something like this, where the first message sends an audio ping but the next messages don't until you've open and read them. Could be nice for servers as well, but I think DMs are the more "important" and easy to miss if you just mute someone.

Platform

macOS, Windows, Linux, Web, Self-hosting

Additional information

The Vencord/Vesktop plugin called OnePingPerDM.

Current problem

The mobile client will keep sending new notification sounds every time a message from the chat is sent, regardless of whether there already exists a notification from that DM. What this means is when people send short bursts of messages, the phone buzzes again and again and again... or worse yet, plays the notification sound if the phone is not on vibrate.

Proposed change

Discord already does fixed this on mobile. If there is an active notification from that person or group chat, the phone will simply "add" to the same notification rather than sending a second one right below it. I am unsure of the exact mechanism behind this, but this feature must have existed in Android's API since at least Android 6 as I remember it working there. This is especially important for unmuted group chats, where it would be handy to know the first time someone sends a message, but not to have the phone constantly ringing when there is an active conversation I'm not taking part in. One feature however that Discord does not add, that I think would be handy is setting a timer for when the phone will replay the notification sound. This is handy so that one notification being present does not mute the notifications from that group or person indefinitely until the notification is cleared.

Platform

Android

Additional information

Settings: notifications Setting line: Resend notifications: yes/no If yes: Another line displays setting for: Resend every: (30s/1m/2m/5m ... send always) (send always is what can be described as the current default behavior) The ability to pick a time would make it so that for the people that do send short bursts of messages, you get one notification, but not until roughly when they start typing again after this set period of time. Makes it harder to miss messages that would otherwise get silenced by this system. Again, all user configurable so everyone is satisfied. This is one of the main reasons I never switched from Discord to Telegram, as Discord's notification system is far better than theirs, and it would be great if Fluxer had this too.

Reproduction steps

  1. Open a Group DM in the Fluxer mobile app.
  2. Have multiple messages arrive in the Group DM within a short period of time.
  3. Observe the notifications received by the phone.

Observed behaviour

The issue from #1762 is still reproducible. Every message arriving in the Group DM is treated as a separate notification instead of being grouped/stacked. Each notification also plays the notification sound(the recording doesn't pick up the sound but check the ring icon next to the notification, that is the phone playing the sound), causing the phone to repeatedly ring for every message. A screen recording demonstrating the issue is attached.

Platform

Android

Details

Expected behaviour Multiple messages from the same Group DM should be grouped/stacked into a single notification rather than each message creating a separate notification. The notification sound should also not play repeatedly for every individual message in rapid succession.

Current problem

The messages appear in a pretty ugly way compared to what other messaging apps (i.e. Discord) do Additionally the messages seem to appear in reverse order

Can reproduce CR - Notifications were properly grouped, but each triggered a notification sound individually despite rapid-firing several messages in a row. Three separate trials returned the same results. Im glad someone did a post about this, this is the main issue I have with fluxer unfortunately. I had to disable notificatons althogether on my phone because of this. After 2 or 3 notifications (hopefully we can get a slider to pick the limit) from the same DM group without me answering, I should stop receiving notificatons for this DM. Im glad to know its in the works, though I wonder how ill know whenever this functionnality is being added.
